Michelangelo

Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in 1475 and died 1564. Michelangelo started his career in Florence. When he first visited Rome between 1496 and 1500 just 20 years old, he created the sculpture Pieta. Pieta can be seen in St. Peters Basilica. After finishing Pieta Michelangelo became a very well known artist and when he returned to Florence he made the gigantic sculpture David. David was completed in 1504.

Michelangelo later got several tasks in Rome from The Pope Julius II. The intention was that Michelangelo should create a grave monument for the Pope, but this was abrupted when the Pope asked Michelangelo to paint the cealing of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo accepted the task and for four years from 1508 he lay alone on his back up under the cealing and created the paintings that are so very well-known.

The Pope Paulus III gave Michelangelo the task to paint The last Judgement. This is an enormous painting on a wall in the Sistine Chapel.

The last judgement became the final great masterpiece made by Michelangelo. He died some four years after finishing the painting.
