Colosseum

Colosseum is an amphitheatre where thousands of gladiotors and animals died during the antiquity only for the purpose of entertainment. Colosseum was stripped of its marble by different Popes to be used for various renaissance- and baroquebuildings. The Popes soon discovered that it was easier to tear down the wall and pick up the marble from the ground instead of climbing to the top to remove the marble. This is the reason for the famous shape of Colosseum today.

Colosseum could take more than 45 000 spectators who witnessed some of the cruelest spectacles in the history. The Emperor Trajanus for example arranged a 123 days long spectacle where 5000 people and 11 000 animals were killed.

When visiting the Colosseum it is worth the money to pay for a guided tour. A guide paints a picture of what it was like during the ancient Rome. To walk around inside the Colosseum by your own is not worth while.

The Triumphal Arch next to Colosseum is The Constance Arch, which was built in 315 as a memorial of the Emperor Constance’s victory over Maxentius a few years earlier.
