Forum Romanum

Forum Romanum are the enormous excavations between the Colosseum and the Capitol and they are the oldest of all forums. It was first an etruscan cemetery but later became the power centre of the Roman Empire with courts, offices and churches in enormous marble buildings. Today of course, all that remains are ruins, but it is fantastic to stroll around in the history and besides it is free.

If one notices the person in the picture one realizes how tremendous the buildings in Forum Romanum are.

If one starts the walk through Forum Romanum by the Colosseum one will finish the walk on the Capitol. In the centre of the Capitol stands the enormous statue in bronze representing Marcus Aurelius and the square is surrounded by grand palaces. Here are Palazzo Nuovo and Palazzo dei Conservatorio, which together forms Musei Capitolini. In Palazzo dei Conservatorio stands the original etruscan statue representing the she-wolf feeding Romulus and Remus.

Romulus och Remus

If one do not wish to enter the museum one can find a copy of Romulus and Remus behind Palazzo Senatorio. It is quite difficult to find but if one stands next to the Marcus Aurelius statue in the middle of the Capitol and face Forum Romanum one will find the statue if one walks around Palazzo Senatorio directly to the left. From up here there is also a splendid view of Forum Romanum and the Colosseum.

On the opposite side of the Capitol stands the classical statues representing Castor and Pollux, sons of the God Zeus. Here starts the long sets of stairs Cordonata di Michelangelo leading down to Piazza San Marco.
