Pantheon

Pantheon

Pantheon “The house of all the Gods” is a circular temple with a dome shaped roof. Perhaps it was this roof that inspired Michelangelo when he constructed the dome roof of the St. Peters Basilica. The first Pantheon was built by Marcus Agrippa 27 before Christ. This Pantheon was burnt down and Hadrianus had it rebuilt. Perhaps Pantheon is the best kept building from the antiquity.

Pantheon is 43.3 m wide and 43.3 meter high. In the roof there is a 9 meter wide hole where smoke from sacrificed animals could rise up to the Gods. The hole lets in the sunlight and works as a sundial. It also lets in rain, however the water falls down into a perfect circle in the marble floor and disappears through holes.

In Pantheon the King Vittorio Emanuele II is buried as well as the sculptor and painter Raphael.
