Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona

Fontana di Nettuno

Piazza Navona was originally built as a sport stadium 90 A.D. There are many extremely beautiful palaces surrounding the square. However the three fountains are the most interesting pieces here. Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in the middle, made by Bernini, is the most magnificent. This fountain visualises the four river Gods: the Danube, the Nile, the Ganges and the Rio de la Plata which represents these four continets. It is said that Bernini despised his opponent Borromini and the church Borromini built in the square; Sant Agnese in Agone, so much that he had ”The Nile” covering his face so that he would not have to see the church.

The other fountains are named Fontana di Nettuno by Antonia della Bitta, representing Neptune’s struggle with a seamonster and Fontana del Moro created by Giacomo della Porta.
