Outside the city wall
There are a lot to see outside the city wall. I have chosen to tell a bit more about two particular excursions Villa Borghese and the suburb EUR.
Besides them one kan also visit for example Villa Guilia with a very interesting courtyard. Villa Guilia also has a museum with a lot of etruscan objects. The garden surrounding Villa Doria Pamphij is an enormous verdant oasis in Rome and a very nice excursion. San Paolo fuori le Mura is a lovely basilica containing the rests of a sepulchral chamber from the very first years A.D. containing the grave of St. Paul.
Rome is surrounded by the catacombs. There are more than 60 catacombs with a length of more than 10 kilometers containing more than ten thousand graves. During the first years A.D. the Christians started to bury their dead below ground. This is how the catacombs were formed. The Christians did not bury their dead below ground because of the persecutions. The catacombs were just Christian graveyards deep below ground. Catacombe de San Callisto is a catacomb along Via Appia open for the public.
