EUR
If one takes subway B and go south to the last but one stop one reaches Esposizione Universale di Roma, which is shortened EUR. This suburb is the exact opposite to Rome inside the city walls. In EUR the houses are staight and modern, the artificial lake is straight and almost quadratic and there is even a quadratic Colosseum; Palazzo della Civilità del Lavoro.
Benito Musselini started building this suburb for the great world exhibition in Rome 1942. However the building was abrupted during the second world war and did not restart until 1951.
The architect Marcello Piacentini was in charge of the project and his idea was to give EUR modern and functionell shapes. He of course achieved his mission and it is intresting, if one has time, to visit EUR since it gives a completely different experience compared to the grand Rome.
