Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II

The monument annoys a lot of the inhabitants in Rome because it was built on classical ground, where probably many relics of the ancient Rome are hidden. Perhaps the monument is a bit extravagant and pompous and it really does not contain anything. The monument is only a memorial built by Vittorio Emmanuelle as a memorial of himself. The Roman people sometimes call the monument ”false teeth of Rome”, ”the Wedding cake” or ”the Typewriter”.
Vittorio Emmanuelle was the first King of Italy and he also was the one to unite the country. The Monument is supposed to be a Memorial of the unification of Italy and was completed in 1911.
If one walks up the stairs to the unknown soldier’s grave from the first world war one gets a magnificant view of Rome and Forum Romanum.
